If you are planning to start a company or become a director of an existing company in Australia, you are legally required to have a Director Identification Number (Director ID). It is a strict requirement designed to prevent the use of false or fraudulent director identities.

What is a Director ID?

A Director ID is a unique 15-digit identifier given to a director forever. You only need to apply once, and you keep the same number even if you change companies, stop being a director, change your name, or move overseas.

When do I need to apply?

Under current Australian law, you must apply for your Director ID before you are appointed as a director of a company. If you are setting up a new company with Loyal Bright Accountants, we will ask you for this number before we can finalize the registration with ASIC.

How to Apply Online (3 Steps)

Applying is free and usually takes less than 15 minutes if you have your documents ready.

1. Set up your myID app: You will need the Australian Government's myID app downloaded on your smartphone. You must set your identity strength to at least "Standard" or "Strong" using documents like your Passport, Driver's Licence, or Medicare card.
2. Gather your ATO documents: To prove your identity, the registry will ask questions based on your tax history. Have your Tax File Number (TFN), residential address, and two documents handy (e.g., a recent ATO Notice of Assessment, bank account details where you receive tax refunds, or a superannuation account statement).
3. Apply via ABRS: Go to the Australian Business Registry Services (ABRS) website. Click "Apply now with myID," log in, follow the prompts, and your Director ID will be issued instantly on the screen.
